China has successfully developed the country's largest 616S pistons for heavy hammers with a diameter of 360 mm

On June 16, 2021, Mianyang Qianchui Mechanical Equipment Co., Ltd., at the request of XCMG Group's Heavy Hydraulic Hammer Project, began to develop a Φ360mm ultra-large piston for a 5-ton hydraulic hammer designed for 70-80 ton heavy-duty excavators. Considering the high technical requirements for special steel and heat treatment for the extra large diameter Φ360mm, Qianchui engineers have carried out intensive research and development work. As a result, the problems of hardenability, structural transformations and mechanical properties of the special material 616S for large-sized pistons with a diameter of Φ360 mm were successfully solved. After carburizing and quenching, the hardness of the extra-large hydraulic hammer piston was HRC 59–61, the radial runout value was ≤0.10 mm, and the impact strength of the material was ≥128 J. The design and delivery task was fully completed.
As of 2026, the performance characteristics of the extra-large 616S pistons with a diameter of 360 mm, installed on dozens of heavy excavators weighing 70–80 tons, remain fully normal. No piston experienced quality problems such as fracture, head failure or inflation, resulting in a high degree of acceptance and unanimously positive feedback from users.
